The mid-century “baby boom” has become the “retirement boom.” And, although some changes are inevitable with age, boomers are still shaking things up. They aren’t all ready to give up their homes and move to retirement villages or assisted living. Instead of uprooting themselves to find age-adapted housing, older Americans increasingly are modifying their homes to suit their changing needs. This is such a sweeping trend it has its own name – “aging-in-place” – and its own organization – the National Aging-in-Place Council (NAIPC).

A professional builder with appropriate expertise can modify most homes to be user-friendly for those with decreased vision, hearing, strength, endurance, or mobility. Innovation Const. Co. Design & Build is a credentialed CAPS company. As a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist, Keith has been trained in:

  • The unique needs of the older adult population
  • Aging-in-place home modifications
  • Common remodeling projects
  • Solutions to common barriers

When you hire a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist, you are buying a service rather than a product. As a CAPS-designated contractor, we are specially qualified to help you adapt your home for existing conditions or plan ahead with a thoughtful remodel. We retrofit for accessibility, and also recommend the cost wise option of basement conversion, as we discuss in a previous post.

A home can be remodeled to address future needs while remaining beautiful and usable by all. We discuss this approach in our article “All-Access Pass.”  These universal design concepts include (to name just a few):

  • wider halls and doorways
  • varied-height countertops
  • lowered light switches
  • lever-style door handles
  • lower-level drawer storage.

The normal process of aging should not necessarily keep us from enjoying the pleasures and familiarity of life in our own home. Some modifications are as simple as

  • using rocker-type switches for lighting (you can turn them on and off with an elbow if your hands or range of motion are compromised)
  • raising a dishwasher, lowering cooking surfaces (for height or bending limitations)

For a look at more ways to modify your house so it’s your home for life, keep an eye out for future posts.
